It all kicked off at the Lincoln Centre in NY this morning (or maybe this afternoon depending on your location when you're reading this) with contemporary designer Nicholas K who's designs looked remarkably easy to wear - I'd even go as far as describing them as comfortable, practical, with a fashionable twist! Now for someone who was once repulsively described as 'always looking comfortable' this excites me. Comfort and fashion were usually not two words that never belonged in a sentence together, until Nicholas Kunz. What attracted me to the first collection of NYFW was the irrisistable ease of how the clothes appeared on the catwalk. Easy looking, light wearing, almost sports luxe items in earthy toned hues - lots of greens, browns and neutrals, that anybody could pull off on a sunny spring afternoon. And although I won't be going all out to embrace the sports luxe look, I did spy a beautiful lightweight green parka that will be fabulous for SS next year.
Next up was Richard Chai, who's models emerged from backstage looking as though they'd just showered and quickly thrown on some oh so fabulously slick looking sports wear. Again, sportswear, even fashionable sportswear, isn't really my thing but overall I was pleased. One thing that did baffle me was the mesh pants worn underneath a number of items - I was genuinely flummoxed! Can I wear this as a pop out for some shopping on Saturday without getting a few raised eyebrows? Probably not, but the idea of the unattainable purity and impractical nature of the collection was what had me hook line and centre - and that's only from looking at pictures. And although I wasn't feeling the mesh trousers underneath shorts, I loved the last look. A mixture of textures and neutral tones which proved that sport luxe can be wearable for us normal girls too...
